The weather conditions for Sunday’s shoot appeared to be perfect – warm and sunny with a light breeze. For the elite Juniors, it represented a last chance to get in a full round ahead of the UK National Championships at Lilleshall on 5/6th of July. For the Seniors it was a last chance to shoot a WA 1440 round before the Club Championships on the 20th. However, appearances were deceptive and the unpredictable wind, swirling around the target faces and then dropping altogether, made life difficult for everyone.
The Gents Compound division saw the usual three-way tussle between Dave Moore, Pete Mumford and Colin Moore. It quickly became apparent the fight for top spot would be between Dave and Pete. Dave pulled out a 13 point lead over Pete at the first distance (90m), but Pete had reduced this to 1 point by the end of the second distance (70m). By the end of the third distance (50m) Pete had taken the lead and it all hung on the last (30m) distance. Pete shot tidily but not well enough, and Dave Moore ran out the victor by 6 points.
The Ladies Compound was a two horse race between Sarah Rigby and Joy Gough with Sarah leading from start to finish. Rigby was slightly disappointed with her score but only because her standards are so high and her disappointed cry of “oh it’s only a 9”, became the catchphrase of the day.
Three archers turned up for the Gent’s Recurve, but Tony Hartley and guest archer Thomas Bott (home in the break between University terms) only stayed for the morning which left Danny Cowin as the only Recurver to shoot the round of the day.
Likewise in the Ladies Recurve prior commitments meant that Karen Lott could only stay for the morning but she made good use of her time to record a personal best score for the Long Metric I.
Juniors Josh Trafford, Bradley Layton and Charlotte Harris shot a Metric II round according to their age group. Charlotte Harris lead from start to finish and recorded another top quality score adding 46 points to her pb. Bradley Layton was a little below par but finished ahead of Josh Trafford who added 107 points to his pb for the round. In the afternoon they were joined by beginners Joseph Reaney and Toby Young. Joseph shooting a Short Metric II round added 84 points to his pb and Toby, who shot a Short Metric III, added a whopping 113 points to his.
