A 14-strong team from the Isle of Man enjoyed a successful trip to this year’s Northern Ireland Poomsae Championship.
Staged in Lisburn on June 21, the annual international championship saw a combined team from two clubs - Manx Tigers and Southern Manx Tigers - claim three gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
‘It was a fantastic experience for the team, and a wonderful opportunity to test themselves against competitors from around Europe,’ said Poomsae Coach Lisa Meads.
‘This is the third year running we’ve sent a team to Northern Ireland - in 2012 there were just three in the team, last year there were four and this year we’ve been able to send 14, across a range of ages, from the under-9s to the under-50s.
‘I think this is testament to both the development the clubs have made in recent years and the popularity of Taekwondo in the Island. We are growing all the time and we’re already planning our next competition trips.’
The team’s medal winners in Northern Ireland were:
• Dolly Sulco - B Class +36 Senior Female - gold
• Simon Comer and Dolly Sulco - B Class 2nd Pair - gold
• Owen Beckett and Ushita Shah - B Class 2nd Pair - silver
• Lisa Meads - A Class U50 Female - bronze
• William Comer - B Class U9 Mini Peewee Male - bronze
• Ryan Coates - C Class U11 Peewee Male - bronze
• Gypsy-Mae Quirk - D Class U9 Mini Peewee Female – bronze
Manx Tigers train at their Pinewood Dojang in Pulrose, while Southern Manx Tigers train at Arbory Parish Hall. Both clubs are affiliated with the Isle of Man Taekwondo Association, a non-profit making organisation set up to promote the teaching and development of the Olympic sport in the Island, which is a member nation of the World Taekwondo Federation.
