Richard Radcliffe: 30 years a commissioner

by isleofman.com 25th June 2014

Ramsey Town Commissioner Richard Radcliffe has served the people of Ramsey for 30 years.

The landmark achievement was acknowledged at the Commission’s public meeting on Wednesday June 18th by chairman Captain Nigel Malpass when he said Mr Radcliffe, who was elected to represent the town’s south ward on June 1st 1984, remained the longest-serving member of the board.

‘Engaging with the community, committing to attending meetings, reviewing and researching items for debate, attending community functions and events in the capacity of commissioner or, indeed, representing the authority as chairman, places considerable demands on the individual. Ramsey is fortunate that it can attract people willing to give so generously of their time to public service and the community.’

Mr Radcliffe has served as a member of the board, chairman in 1994-1995 and, for many years, as chairman or lead member for finance. He has worked with 19 chairmen and 46 members.

He is also secretary to Ramsey Football Club; a committee member and the treasurer of the League of Friends of Ramsey Cottage Hospital; a member of Ramsey National Week’s organising committee, sits on the Isle of Man Sports Council committee and acts as a marshal for the TT and the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling.

Captain Malpass continued: ‘In recent months Richard’s endeavours in promoting, fundraising and taking forward the scheme to develop a community sports facility at the Mooragh have brought together the many sports clubs in Ramsey and the north of the Island in what is an ambitious project, which I am certain, knowing Richard’s drive and determination, will deliver a first-class community facility.’

Concluding Captain Malpass said Mr Radcliffe was ‘a champion of the community’ and, on behalf of the board, presented him with a watercolour by local artist Michael Tramontana of Ramsey quayside and harbour. In response Mr Radcliffe said it had been and continued to be ‘an honour to serve the town.’
