The Isle of Man Archery Club met on Sunday for their shoot as usual, and as usual the weather played a significant part. This time however the conditions were difficult because of the heat and several archers struggled over the course of the day. The round of the day was a York/Hereford for the seniors, while the juniors shot a variety of National rounds according to their age group.

In the Compound category, only Pete Mumford and Sarah Rigby made light of the hot weather. Sarah Rigby, in spite of being stung on the hand during the course of the shoot, added 10 points to her personal best score for the round. Mumford was just a handful of points below his very best. Of the other Compound archers, Colin Moore, Joy Gough and Dave Moore recorded scores that were well below what they normally shoot.

In the Recurve division, Danny Cowin recorded a host of misses and was disappointed with his performance. Also failing to hit the target at the longer distance was Barbara Harris. The seven misses she recorded at the 80yd distance effectively put paid to her chances of a win. Karen Lott, who had only one miss but too many 1’s and 3’s, struggled to find her form in the morning but hit her stride after lunch over the two shorter distances to finish first on the podium. Neither woman shot anywhere near their best.

The Juniors’ fared somewhat better with four out of six of them posting personal best scores. Joseph Reaney added 4 points to his previous best for the Junior National round, with Jack Tyrer adding 6 points to his for the same round. The youngest archer on the day, James Hill, added a terrific 31 points to his previous best for the Short Junior National round. The biggest improvement came from Bradley Layton who added 74 points to his pb for the Bristol II round he shot. Charlotte Harris recorded yet another Junior Master Bowman equivalent score.

The George sisters, Aalin and Kirsten, were also in evidence on Sunday but they elected to shoot metric rounds by way of practice ahead of their next tour of duty with the GB Squad. The two girls are due to compete in Russia at the beginning of next month. They were very grateful to Sarah Rigby, who gave up her lunch break to help them practice team rounds in which timing during change-overs is crucial.
