False alarm and hoax call warning issued by Fire Service

by isleofman.com 19th April 2014
The public is being warned about the cost and danger of false alarms and hoax calls to the Fire Service.
Unnecessary call-outs can divert crews from genuine emergencies, and also places additional pressure on already stretched finances.
The advice comes after crews went to an alarm call at a domestic property on the outskirts of Douglas.
It turned out to be a routine check.
The Fire Service says it will always respond to a 999 call, and understands there will be times when an incident turns out to be less serious than first thought.
But householders, commercial property owners and tradespeople are being urged to take care, especially when carrying out routine maintenance of fire alarm systems.
The Emergency Services Joint Control Room should be informed about alarm checks so they don't send out crews in emergency response - which places officers and road users at a greater than normal risk.
Consultation on a bill to modernise fire and rescue service legislation recently finsihed, and one of its proposals is to charge for things like false alarms.
