As the major roadworks on Peel Road Douglas draw to a close, the new road layout will be apparent to all road users, both on the carriageway and on the footway.  As voted by Tynwald in February 2013, a cycleway has been installed to facilitate the movement of both commuter and leisure cyclists on this route.
 
Motorists will already be aware that there is an advisory cycle lane painted onto the carriageway between the pedestrian crossing at McDonalds and the junction at Circular Road on the inbound/ eastwards lane and between Belmont Terrace and McDonalds pedestrian crossing on the outbound/westwards lane.  Areas of likely vehicle/cycle interaction, ie junctions and accesses to private property, are highlighted in green within the cycleway, as are the advance stop boxes at both Pulrose Road and Circular Road traffic lights.  There is also a right turn lane for the majority of the length of the road improvement to allow turning traffic to stack safely before completing their manoeuvres.  Drivers should not enter the cycle lane unless it is unavoidable.
 
Some short lengths of shared pedestrian/cyclist facility have been created, one at the Pulrose Road junction and the other between McDonalds pedestrian crossing and the Quarterbridge roundabout.  Both pedestrians and cyclists are asked to travel with caution on these sections.  At Pulrose Bridge, a Toucan crossing has been used to allow both cyclists and pedestrians to cross this busy road safely.
 
It is anticipated that work will begin shortly on the Heritage Railway Track between Union Mills and Glen Vine to upgrade the surface utilising the concrete dug out of Peel Road, which has been crushed and sorted into different sizes of stone specifically for this purpose.
