Unusual outcome to Gambia visit

by isleofman.com 12th April 2014
A recent aid visit to the Gambia had some unexpected results - including a child being named after a mobile phone!
Fams Camara from Kirk Michael, who runs the charity Mannin Africa Sponsors International, had successfully bid for funding from the International Development Committee and went out to ensure a a borehole was drilled for the village in which he grew up.
It replaced the now inadequate well his mother installed 40 years ago.
While he was there, Fams was also able to distribute goods donated by Island businesses.
As a result of the new borehole, around 1,800 villagers now have access to plentiful clean drinking water and are planning to grow vegetables to improve their diet and provide an income.
Fams also distributed football kit and footballs donated by Charles Turner from Intersport and Ramsey Sports & Leisure.
To show their appreciation, the team organised an inter-village football match.
A number of villages and schools received T-shirts and pens donated by RL360, whilst one of the mobile phones donated by Manx Telecom was used to summon a doctor to a lady who was giving birth.
Without help the child would almost certainly have died.
To mark the happy ending the child has been given an unusual name - Lamin "Nokia" Jobe.Clip 1
