Added attraction on mountain tram

by isleofman.com 11th April 2014

Travellers will get an extra service on the mountain railway service that gets under way today.

Tramcar no.1 has been fitted with a recorded commentary giving historical information at selected points along the five mile journey to and from the summit of Snaefell. Transport authorities say the commentary is in response to customer demand. and includes information about the rail braking system as well as the attractions, mines and views that can be seen on the journey.

Infrastructure Minister Laurence Skelly said: 'The heritage railways are as popular with residents as with visitors. While we must retain the integrity of our rail heritage it is equally important that we improve our customer experience. Enhancements such as this onboard commentary and developing fine dining opportunities on both Snaefell and the steam railway are ways of driving up passenger numbers and help secure the railways' future.'

The Snaefell mountain railway service started its summer season today, with trams operating regularly from Laxey starting at 10.15am.
