Chief Minister leads Isle of Man delegation to China

by isleofman.com 7th March 2014

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK is leading a major Manx delegation to China this weekend for five days of meetings designed to cement the Island’s relations with the world’s second largest economy.

The mission comprises private sector representatives as well as senior Government officers. It also includes the City of London MP Mark Field, an influential friend of the Isle of Man and an advocate of its partnership with the City.

During an intensive programme of political and business meetings in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai, the delegation will promote the Island as a reputable international centre that is an ideal platform for Chinese business expanding into the UK, the City and Europe. The meetings start in Beijing on Monday (March 10) and conclude in Shanghai on Friday (March 14).

The visit builds on the Manx Government’s good relations with the current Chinese Ambassador in London His Excellency Liu Xiaoming, who came to the Island twice last year. It follows a series of trips to China undertaken by the Department of Economic Development.

The Chief Minister explained: ‘China is an economic powerhouse and countries around the world, including the UK, are actively promoting themselves there. It takes time to develop relationships in China, and personal contact is important, so delegations like this are necessary if we are to bring more Chinese business to the Isle of Man.’

Mr Bell added: ‘Economic growth has to be top priority for the Island to sustain job opportunities, living standards and funding for public services. The potential economic benefits of building business links with China are significant, which is why we are investing so much time and effort in this visit.’
