Bio med industry cluster gathers pace

by isleofman.com 5th March 2014

The Isle of Man has earned a positive reputation for nurturing niche business clusters.
Bioscience is the latest sector to find favour with what the Island can offer and its fledgling cluster is set to expand.
A number of highly specialist bio-med firms have chosen the Island as their base, attracted by a business-friendly environment and tailored service industries.
Last December a conference in Douglas promoted the Island as an ideal location for firms to launch and market products they may have spent many years and millions of dollars, developing.
It's hoped a pool of bio-med scientific and business 'know how' and common aims will attract more companies to join a Manx cluster, in areas from manufacturing to protecting intellectual property.
Bio science firm Aqix Ltd plans to establish a base in the Island, following last year's conference.
The company has patented a specialist fluid to preserve human tissue in transit, for organ transplants and stem cell treatment.
Inward investment chief for the sector at DED Courtenay Heading says contacts forged at the event are paying dividends.
Chief scientific officer at Aqix Ltd Dr Doug Rees says the Island has the 'can do' approach vital to firms breaking into entirely new areas.
