Richard Buckley, co-director of University of Leicester Archaeology Services and the lead archaeologist on the search for Richard III –the King in the Car Park – has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List ‘for services to archaeology’.
Mr Buckley made his first visit to the island in September, to present an insight into the excavation work, and subsequent incredible circumstances, in which Richard III’s grave was discovered under a car park in Leicester. The presentation took place at Arragon Mooar, the home of Dr John Taylor, and was well received by approximately a hundred attendees.
Whilst on the island, Mr Buckley enjoyed his other passion – trains! After visiting the Railway Museum in Port Erin, he rode the steam train to Douglas, the horse tram along the promenade to board the electric tram to Laxey, and then to Snaefell Summit. Sadly, he was unable to enjoy the glorious views due to the inclement weather, but hopefully he will be able to do so on a future visit, as he has relatives living on the island.
