ICSA Isle of Man has chosen the new dedicated breast care unit at Noble’s Hospital as its nominated charity for fundraising at this month’s Annual Dinner & Prize-giving. The sold-out event, on Friday 20 September (tonight) at the Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club, Santon, is sponsored by RBS International, and will welcome Germaine Greer as after-dinner guest speaker.
The evening’s charity raffle will support the new dedicated breast care unit at Noble’s Hospital. The dedicated unit is the idea of the Isle of Man’s new Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery and Breast Care. Ms Bello and her team are responsible for taking forward the Department of Health’s plans to offer a wide range of enhanced services on-Island, providing those who develop breast cancer with an exceptional standard of care – covering services including the provision of oncoplastic breast surgery, sentinel node biopsy, immediate and delayed breast reconstruction, symmetrisation surgery and aesthetic breast reconstruction. The service receives around 100 new patients every year, on top of the list of existing patients.
Ms Bello said: “Whilst we provide an excellent clinical service it’s a challenge to manage and develop the service while having to use several areas of the hospital – we don’t have a fixed location of our own. The Department of Health are able to make space available but are unable to fund the work required to make the space ideal for us and equip accordingly – which will cost between ?600,000 and ?750,000 – so we are appealing to everyone to help us raise the funds required to enable patients to have all of their treatment in one dedicated space.
‘With no permanent home currently we have to run the service from different parts of the hospital on different days and although part of the service is ‘drop in’ that can be an unnecessary challenge to deliver when we’re forever moving around. Our goal is to create our own permanent space where we can care for patients appropriately in a sensitive and sympathetic environment and further develop the Island’s breast care service.’

ICSA President David Venus and Chief Executive Simon Osborne will attend the dinner and David will present prizes and awards to students as part of the evening’s celebrations. Ron Berry has again kindly taken on the role of Master of Ceremonies.
