The Executive Director of Celton Manx, Bill Mummery, has congratulated the participants and organisers of Relay for Life Isle of Man after the event raised ?42,500 on the day.
Mr Mummery said: ‘This was our third successive year as lead sponsor and I am delighted that once again the people of the Isle of Man demonstrated their customary generosity of spirit and helped Relay for Life Isle of Man near its ambitious target of ?50,000 on August 24th.
‘We have been pleased to support a sporting challenge that is not only open to all ages and abilities but also provides an opportunity to celebrate the strength and courage of those affected by cancer.
‘I attended the opening ceremony at the National Sport Centre and had the privilege to meet a number of survivors of cancer. It was both a humbling and inspirational experience to hear such stirring accounts of determination in the face of the physical and emotional demands cancer places on them and their loved ones.
‘Their fortitude, along with the commitment of all those involved in Relay for Life Isle of Man, is to be applauded and brings to mind the words of the late broadcaster and journalist John Diamond who died from cancer in 2001: “Cancer is a word, not a sentence.”’
Organising committee chairman Nicola Walkingshaw said: ‘To have nearly reached our ?50,000 target on the day is a fantastic community achievement. We’re enormously grateful to all those who helped us raise this outstanding sum of ?42,500, not least Celton Manx who have supported us for three years now.
‘The event exceeded our every expectation, with more than 500 people taking part – the highest number to date. Bill Mummery spoke of his “inspirational experience” when he met some of the survivors. For all of us on the committee this year’s success is inspiration to ensure Relay for Life Isle of Man 2014 achieves another fundraising record.’
