Barrule Return Home for Isle of Man Concert

by isleofman.com 14th June 2013

Manx Music missionaries Barrule will be interrupting their UK Album Launch tour for a visit home next week with a concert at the Peel Centenary Centre on the 22nd June.

Their debut album is causing quite a stir in the UK media, with the Telegraph describing it as "An exciting sound – real zest and quality", the Scotsman giving it 4 stars "The album aims to elevate the profile of their island’s music. Players of conviction and passion they make a fine job of it", and the world music magazine Songlines saying "Barrule is more than a group – it's an assertion of cultural identity". The album has been featured not only on Mark Radcliffe's BBC Radio 2 Folk Show and BBC Radio 3's World On 3 show, but also on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio Wales, Celtic Music Radio, BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal and on other regional BBC Radio folk shows throughout the UK.

Last week Barrule were announced as the first ever band to represent the Isle of Man at one of the UK’s most prestigious World Music festivals, WOMAD. The festival, originally founded in 1980 by Peter Gabriel, celebrates the world's many forms of music arts and dance, and runs from the 25th - 28th July in Charlton Park in Wiltshire. The trio will be performing alongside guest singer Greg Joughin on the BBC Radio 3 Stage from 16:00 on Friday 26th July.

Barrule hit the headlines with their fund-raising efforts earlier this year, when they gave away the track 'Ny Kirree Fo Niaghtey' (The Sheep Under the Snow) on their website, in exchange for donations towards the IOM Agricultural Benevolent Trust. The appeal raised a staggering ?6,500 with donations coming in from all over the globe, some as far away as the USA and Australia! The band will be officially handing over the proceeds of the appeal to the IOM ABT during the concert in Peel, and will be playing the track that helped raised the funds, with a guest appearance from Manx singer Greg Joughin who performed on the album.

Tickets for the Peel Centenary Centre concert on the 22nd June are ?10 and are available online at http://www.barruletrio.com/iom-concert-2013/ or from Celtic Gold in Peel and Shakti Man in Ramsey. Doors are scheduled for 7:30pm.
