BB Consulting Engineering employee Neil Quane has secured the coveted title of North West Education Volunteer of the Year.
The award recognises an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to promoting this cause, giving his or her time to represent the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the profession, at a range of educational events in schools on the Isle of Man.
Neil, who has worked for the Douglas based company for nearly three years, impressed the judges, not only with his commitment and dedication but also his direct input and fresh ideas.
The judges pointed to his proactive approach in helping to engage and enthuse many young people about the world of civil engineering.
Neil undertook a number of school visits, plus one to a local Brownies group, the focus of which was the assembly of a tetrahedron by the youngsters. Neil also organised an Institution of Civil Engineers stand at a large government backed careers event in Villa Marina.
Neil was delighted to have received the award.
“I feel I’m repaying what colleagues and other civil engineers have done in supporting my work. It’s great to see the young people enjoying something I’m passionate about,” said Neil.
ICE North West Regional Director Alan Butler praised Neil’s commitment, along with the work of a small army of volunteers who freely give up their time to promote civil engineering.
“Plenty of initiative, hard work and commitment were on show in this year’s nominations. The North West has around 250 educational volunteers who work tremendously hard to promote the importance of civil engineering in schools and other places of education,” he said.
