Green light for Dental Hygienists and Therapists

by isleofman.com 9th April 2013

Due to the GDC giving the green light for patients to have direct access to Dental Hygienists and Therapists, treatment can now be offered without a dental prescription, previously every member of a dental team had to work on the prescription of a dentist however now with direct access this is no longer the case.

The decision to remove the barrier to direct access for some dental care professionals was made following a GDC consultation and full discussion of the evidence at a Council meeting in March. Guidance for registrants will be published before the changes come into effect on 1 May 2013.

From that date dental hygienists and therapists will be allowed to carry out their full scope of practice without prescription and without the patient having to see a dentist first, but the guidance will make clear that they must be confident that they have the skills and competences required to treat patients direct.

CEO of The White Teeth Company Dr. Tracey Bell said:

‘’Direct access on the Isle Of  Man can only improve oral health, In the past access to a dental hygienist or therapist was only via the dentist which in many ways prevented access. Dental hygienists are an imperative part of the team and having worked with them for over 18 years I can clearly see the benefits that regular cleaning ,removal of plaque ,prevention of periodontal disease  and application of sealants  and fluoride have had on my patients On the Isle of Man’’

Chair of the GDC Kevin O’Brien said:

"This decision has been made with patient safety as an upmost priority. Registrants treating patients direct must only do so if appropriately trained, competent and indemnified. They should also ensure that there are adequate onward referral arrangements in place and they must make clear to the patient the extent of their practice and not work beyond it." to be in patients’ best interests.

A team of 4 dental hygienists and therapists are available at the Tracey Bell Clinic, Kensington Road and is available for all registered & non-registered patients, those on NHS waiting lists and also registered with an NHS practice. This service is open to all adults and children who want great preventative care and clean, healthy teeth and gums
