STEP Isle of Man is staging a special presentation which will highlight the legal and tax considerations in relation to Isle of Man and UK charities later this month.
The professional body has invited Old Court Chambers Director Paul Beckett and PKF Director of Taxation Phillip Dearden to present the event ‘UK and Isle of Man Charities’ at the Claremont Hotel in Douglas on Wednesday 20th February. Booking in and refreshments will be available from 12.30pm and the hour-long presentation will start at 1pm.

This is a great opportunity for professionals within the corporate and trust sector and individuals who work for, or are on the boards of, local charities to gain a greater understanding of the legal and tax issues they face in relation to Isle of Man and UK charities.”
The presentation will address Manx charities and tax exemption, charities and VAT, UK source income often taxable on Isle of Man charities constituted as trusts, UK assets within scope of UK IHT for Isle of Man charities constituted as trusts and UK domiciliaries and gifts to local charities.
Paul Beckett said: “The law on charities in the Isle of Man is the jewel in the crown of Manx jurisprudence, and a field yet to be fully developed by the corporate and trust sector in the Island. It is head and shoulders above that of our near neighbours in the UK.”
Paul Beckett has over 30 years’ experience as a lawyer, both within the banking and fiduciary services industry and in private practice. He graduated from Worcester College, Oxford, in 1978 with First Class honours in Jurisprudence and is currently on a graduate programme at New College, Oxford, studying for his Master of Studies in International Human Rights Law. Trained at leading city solicitors Simmons & Simmons, he qualified as an English solicitor in 1981 and as an Isle of Man advocate in 1990. He is also a non-practising solicitor in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Paul specialises in company, contract, commercial and trust law and has a strong track record in compliance, intellectual property and human rights. He has been widely published and has held several public offices in the Isle of Man.
Phillip Dearden is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Taxation, specialising in the offshore areas of UK taxation. He trained in international and domestic corporate tax with a major chartered accountancy firm in London, and since joining PKF in the Isle of Man in 1991, has focused on the provision of offshore tax planning advice. As well as being Chairman of the Isle of Man Society of Chartered Accountants in 2004, Phillip also represented the Society on the Isle of Man Tax Liaison Committee for many years. He is a past Chairman of The Association of Corporate Service Providers. In addition to his own portfolio of clients, Phillip provides advice to local trust and company administration businesses, as well as to existing and potential settlors and beneficiaries. Phillip also deals with tax investigations that quite often involve third party offshore planning that has been poorly planned or implemented. He is in demand as a tutor and lecturer on offshore matters and is a regular contributor to taxation publications. He is also Treasurer of Hospice Care, Isle of Man.
