Microgaming Superstars competition to raise funds for Team Isle of Man squad

by isleofman.com 7th February 2013

The Microgaming Superstars competition - based on the popular BBC TV sports show - will be raising funds for the Isle of Man’s Commonwealth Games team. The event will be held at the NSC on March 17 and, while the emphasis will be on fun, there will also be some tough competition in the battle to find out who is the Island’s best all-round sportsman and sportswoman. There’s also a team event and the organisers are keen for more people to sign up for both individual and team categories.

Microgaming, the world’s largest provider of online gaming software, is sponsoring the contest with all of the proceeds going to the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association which is the organisation responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel and support for Team Isle of Man’s participation at the Commonwealth Games. It is a registered charity and relies upon fundraising activities and donations to fund Team Isle of Man’s participation in the Games which will next be held in Glasgow in 2014.

The Superstars competition will bring together the Island’s top sports people to compete in eight different disciplines including swimming, gym tests, a strength and agility challenge, table tennis tournament, basketball skills test and a bleep test which involves running a series of short sprints against the clock. There will also be two other events - likely to be mountain biking and a wall climbing challenge - but these have still to be confirmed.

Individuals will be asked to raise ?250 to enter, while teams will be required to raise ?500 in sponsorship. As the event is being entirely sponsored by Microgaming, all proceeds will go directly to the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association. Juliet Holt, President of the Association, commented:

“We are delighted to have Microgaming on board as the title sponsor once more. The Commonwealth Games Association does not receive any direct government funding, so events like this are crucial for us to be able to take the sports teams to compete in the Commonwealth Games. We are enormously grateful for Microgaming’s continued support.”

Roger Raatgever, CEO of Microgaming, said:

“After the success of the 2011 Microgaming Superstars event, we’re thrilled to be back as the title sponsors. As a company we are passionate about sport, so naturally we can’t wait to play our part in this year’s event.”

Entries are limited, so will operate on a first come, first served basis. For further information or to enter the event, please go to http://www.cga.im/news.asp?article=552 or email superstars@manx.net or contact Danni Mottram on 418971 or John Knight on 499762.
