Barclays bids farewell to retiring Director after 40 year career

Barclays Wealth & Investment Management bid a fond farewell to Island Director and Head of Intermediaries, Ian Hodgkinson, who retired on the 31st December 2012 after a 40 year career with the bank.

Ian joined Barclays in 1971 and has worked in a number of offices during his time with the organisation including Victoria Street, Liverpool where he met his wife Lesley. He then moved to various offices in the Liverpool and Cheshire area before being offered a tour to the U.S. to study business operations in and around the Houston area, Texas. Ian relocated to the Isle of Man in 1995 to take up the position of Risk Manager.

Ian hails from the South Wirral area and spent his youth in Ellesmere Port where he excelled at a number of sports, playing badminton at county level and football for the local farmers team. His street credentials in the area were further boosted by the purchase of a Reliant Robin in his teenage years – the only car he could drive with a motorbike license!

On his last day on New Year’s Eve, Ian was given the task of closing up the Barclays office as his colleagues thanked him and waved him goodbye.

Ian said: ‘I have had a fantastic career with Barclays. The organisation and the people that I have worked alongside have given me some wonderful memories and I would like to thank everyone for their good wishes for my retirement. Although I am sad to be leaving, I have had some great times and have really enjoyed living in the Isle of Man and working with the team at Barclays.’

Ian will be spending his retirement touring Europe in his latest love – his R.V.! And will be bringing along his vintage Triumph Tiger to take on the narrow and winding European lanes.

Managing Director of Barclays Isle of Man, Simon Scott said: ‘We are very sorry to see Ian leaving the business after a 40 year career with Barclays. He has brought an enthusiasm and dedication to the organisation which will be hard to replicate and I would like to thank him for his years of hard work and commitment.  We all wish him a very long, happy and healthy retirement.’

Ian will be replaced by Steve Clarke who starts his new role as Director of Offshore and Local Markets in February 2013. Steve has over 25 years’ banking experience including significant international roles in South Africa, Seychelles and Botswana.
