The Island's Assessor of Income Tax is to become the top official at Treasury.

Malcolm Couch has been appointed Chief Financial Officer, to succeed Mark Shimmin who will step down later this year.

Dr Couch who's been tax assessor for the past eight years, says the Island faces tough economic challenges but from a strong base, and has promised to deal with them enthusiastically.

Welcoming the appointment, Treasury Minister Eddie Teare paid tribute to Dr Couch for developing the Island's tax regime and fostering its international reputation.

He said Dr Couch had been at the heart of the government's response to external and internal pressures.

Mark Shimmin was due to retire early this year but has agreed to see through the 2013 budget process.
