Manx-based Pokerstars has apologised after one of its staff sent emails to its players about today’s Mayan apocalypse.

The company says it’s changed its emailing system controls after one of its employees sent spam emails to several players directing them to a website which said today marks the end of the Age of Pisces.

The site claimed there’ll be three dark days when electrical and metallic objects won’t work – but things will return to normal on Christmas Day when the Age of Aquarius kicks in.

After an investigation, the company says the business intelligence employee runs the website and had misused its mail server.

In a statement, the company said one of its employees violated internal policies by accessing the marketing database and sending an unauthorized communication to a small number of player email addresses.

It says measures have now been put in place to ensure it won’t happen again, an internal investigation is looking into the issue and no personal details have been accessed.
