Guernsey Footballers withdraw from Rhodes

by isleofman.com 7th March 2006
Fears over the safety of players has led to Guernsey deciding not to send Football teams to next year's Island Games in Rhodes. The sides took part in the most shameful match in the event's history in 2003. Six players, five from Rhodes, were sent off by referee Wendy Toms - the game had to be abandoned. The Greeks withdrew their team and imposed life bans on the guilty players. The Guernsey Football Association's Council has take the decision because it fears the team would be targeted by home fans.
