Vagabonds C number eight Jimmy Cubbon got his marching orders as his team gave up an 18-0 lead to lose 20-18 in the top of the table clash in the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield.
Cubbon picked up two yellow cards and left referee Adrian Shimmin with no alternative but to dismiss him after he pulled down a line out driving maul in the closing stages of the game.
Vagas dominated the first half and thoroughly deserved their early lead.
Two penalties from the versatile Cubbon sent them on their way before centre Mikey Olivier bagged two tries to give his side what seemed an unassailable lead.
Southern Nomads are made of stronger stuff, however, and a Martin Thompson try on the cusp of half time kept them in the hunt.
The second half was like a game of poker – cards everywhere.
Cam Sayle was first to go to the bin for a late tackle and he was soon joined by Jimmy Cubbon and John Pullman who were both caught handling on the ground.
Nomads capitalised and Thompson’s second try brought the deficit down to 18-10 and when Rob Keelan wrestled his way over from close range it was down to 18-15.
In the closing seconds, Cubbon picked up his second yellow and Vagas were reduced to 13 again when Pete Macken joined him for interfering with a tap penalty.
This gave Nomads the space they needed and it was hooker Brendan O’Sullivan who broke the Vagas line with the winning score.
At QE2 Peel, Western Vikings showed their improving form going down narrowly to Ramsey 27-15.
Mike Dias picked up two tries for the northerners, who also bagged tries through Danny Turner, Simon Mason and Bruce Ashton.
Vikings’ tries came from Brian Wozniak and Mark Venables with George Gadsby weighing in with a penalty and a conversion.
