Emergency crews were called out to the bottom of Bank Hill on South Quay, Douglas yesterday evening, after a passer by reported smelling smoke.
A check of the premises showed it was a false alarm, but with "good intentions", according to a fire crew spokesman.
The call out was at about 7.00 pm.
