Day six brings mixed fortunes for Island team

by isleofman.com 21st March 2006
The Isle of Man team has had mixed fortunes on day six of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. In cycling, there was a very good performance from a frustrated Andrew Roche (pictured) in the road time trial. He just missed out on a top 10 place with an 11th position finish in a time of 51 minutes 56.16 seconds on the 40 kilometres beach road course. In very hot conditions - temperatures were well into the 80s – there were also good showings from Graeme Hatcher and Andrew Cook who were 23rd and 30th respectively out of the top-class field. In shooting, the bronze medal pairing of David Walton and Trevor Boyles lie 14th and 30th after day one of the individual competition at Melbourne gun club, while the badminton players Matthew Wilkinson and Andy Fairhurst have at last sampled some action. They drew one of the favourites from the host nation, Brehaut/Denney, in the men’s doubles and were beaten in their opening match 21-18 and 21-5. However, there was brighter news in the singles with Fairhurst progressing through the first round with a 19-21, 21-15, 21-11 win over Ugandan Abraham Wogutel. Wilkinson received a bye. The final local competitor in action today (Tuesday) was Emily Crookall-Nixon and she again excelled as the Commonwealth Games swimming competition drew to a close at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre. She finished 14th in a time of five minutes 18.11 seconds in the women's 400-metres individual medley. Young swimming star, Olivia Rawlinson, withdrew from the same event, clearly tired after four successive days of action for the 13 year-old.
