Student work permits

Students coming to the Island to learn need to be protected by a new work permit scheme, says Trade and Industry Minister Alex Downie.

He says he’s concerned that young people from abroad could be exploited by employers who make them work long hours for low pay.

Introducing a new scheme would ensure the government knows who is working and would make sure students are protected.

Mr Downie (pictured) says students are an invaluable part of the hospitality industry’s workforce:
