The funeral of one of the best-loved and respected band leaders the Isle of Man has ever known will take place this afternoon (Wednesday).
Major Tommy Thirtle passed away last week at the age of 92.
Director of the Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band for almost 30 years, he moved to the Island after a long and distinguished career, rising from humble roots to become Director of Music at Sandhurst Military College and Leader of the Band of the Royal Horse Guards, "the Blues".
A state trumpeter from Sandhurst will travel to the Island to play the Last Post at the funeral, which takes place at the Methodist Church in Arbory Street Castletown at two o’clock.
