Work permit exceptions

Plans to allow nurses, teachers and care workers to work in the Isle of Man without work permits have been attacked by the Transport and General Workers Union.

The proposals, currently under consideration by the Department of Trade and Industry, would loosen legislation in order to fill vacancies.

But Bernard Moffatt (pictured) of the TGWU says he’s disappointed by DTI Minister Alex Downie after recent announcements that the system will be tightened to protect foreign students.

He says that problem would pale in comparison to the number of workers who could take Manx jobs the system is supposed to protect:
