Violence leads to premature end to Pool Championship

by isleofman.com 5th April 2006
The 5th Annual Inter District Pool Championship has been marred by violence.

Tournament Director Rob Callister was forced to bring about a premature ending, after fighting and flash points among the team, which represented the Isle of Man at the 2005 European Championships.

The opening three days of the tournament unfolded with a number of surprise names taking the titles, including Alan Coventry lifting the blue ribbon event; the Top Dog Championship.

However, events on the fourth and final day led organisers to bring the competition to an end due to safety concerns for the large crowd of spectators.

On behalf of the Isle of Man Inter District Championships, the tournament director Rob Callister would like to offer his own personal apologies to everyone at the venue on the final day of play.

Like football in the 80’s, Isle of Man Pool is left with many unanswered questions to ensure this doesn’t happen again. The Isle of Man Inter District Championships and the main sponsors only wish they could “name and shame” the handful of perpetrators.

Most of the team prize fund on offer will be handed out to the teams that reached the semi final of the competition, including the Haven A and Terminus A, who played brilliantly all day.

The committee would like to thank the newly crowned champions Kevin Corlett, Alan Coventry, Marsce Douthwaite, as well as Colin Holland and all the staff at the Ronaldsway Social for their hard work during the four-day tournament.
