Vagabonds slumped to a 18-17 home defeat against fellow strugglers Hoylake as their season’s woes continue.
Vagas went into an early 7-0 lead after Simon Heggs’ inside break opened up the visitors defence for speedy winger Sam Brennan. His five pointer was converted from out wide by the in-form Jonny Beckley.Hoylake hit back on the break with two penalties from full back Steve Young before Vagas extended their lead.Skipper Kevin Riley soared above the Hoylake line out and tapped down for number eight Daryn Thompson.Thompson streaked through the Hoylake line before cleverly offloading to Bryan Kennaugh who touched down.Again Beckley converted and Vagas were in a commanding 14-6 half time lead.Beckley added a penalty midway through the second half to make it 17-6 and Vagas looked home and dry - that is until they started to collapse.A series of penalties gave Hoylake a five-metre scrum and as their pack put on the gas, Vagas crumbled and the front row came up which resulted in referee Mike Davies awarding a penalty try. After Steve Young added the conversion the deficit was reduced to four points at 17-13.As Hoylake threw everything into attack, it became too much for Vagas and after conceding a free kick at one of their own scrums, they were unable to hold Hoylake out with right wing Dan Bulldock squeezing over in the corner.Vagas final flurry earned them a penalty with the very last kick of the game but Beckley’s kick into a very stiff wind went wide of the left hand upright to leave Hoylake clear of the relegation zone with just one match remaining.
