Folic acid in bread

The Island’s public health directorate is in favour of plans for folate – or folic acid – being added to the flour used to bake our daily bread.

In the UK, there is a strong possibility that will soon be the case.

Mothers who are deficient in folic acid are at an increased risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida.

Doctor Paul Emerson says its possible introduction into bread is welcome news.
