C&S reign while Island U18's perform well

by isleofman.com 11th April 2006
It looks like C&S Joinery Construction have retained the Shimmin Wilson Premier A Division title, after beating nearest rivals Ballasalla A 30-27 at the weekend.

The game was fast, close and played in the best of spirits.

In other games on Sunday, in the same league Team Dickinson Cruickshank beat Bushy’s 25-23.

In the B Division Barclays conceded to Shoprite, and Caledonian Trust Misfits beat Ballasalla B 29-15.

No netball was played in the National League because of unfulfilled fixtures. In the A Division a panel awarded the win to Pioneers Sky against Simcocks Trust, and Pioneers Pink got the points against Ballasalla D after Balla conceded.

In the B Division Ashley Allstars conceded to Manx Telecom Minxes.

The Zurich under 18 Island team was away at the Alex Barlass Inter County tournament in Bournemouth at the weekend.

Each team was placed in a pool to play seven matches each, the Isle of Man being with two seeded teams, Essex Met and Wiltshire.

The Manx girls encountered Essex Met in their first game which they knew was going to be tough from the outset, with the final score 3-21. Unfortunately Anna Quayle at GA suffered a nasty ankle injury, which put an end to her day and resulted in a trip to hospital.

The second game was against Oxfordshire and the girls put up a great first half performance but Oxford ran away with it in the second half doubling their score while the Isle of Man only managed one more. The final score in this match was 5 goals to 14.

The next two games were a different story. Against Worcestershire, the girls lost by just 4 goals and had a fantastic match. The game against Suffolk could have gone either way and the girls were a little disappointed to lose this game at 2 goals to 5.

Derbyshire were a very tough outfit to play in game 6. They had beaten Essex Met earlier on in the day, so to hold them 3 goals to 17 was a great result. Derbyshire were the eventual winners of the group.

Finally, the other seeded side Wiltshire, but the Island's defence of Amy Ronan (GK) and Zoe Shimmin (GD) worked very hard to limit their shooters to just 10 goals, again a fine performance based on the scores throughout the day.

Overall the girls acquitted themselves exceptionally well over the weekend. They are a much younger squad; many of the players being under 16 and playing in this higher age group gave them valuable experience. The girls were a credit to the Island and their school.

Squad: Aimee Ronan, Breeshey Harkin, Zoe Shimmin (Vice Captain), Mel Cubbon, Beccy Hindle, Jenny Callister, Hannah Kermode (Captain), Jenna McGregor, Ashleigh Young, Anna Quayle, Sarah Mulgrew, Gabby Leadbeater.

Coaches: Pip Cross, Sue Mitchell, Claire Belcher, Erin Keggen.
