Criticism of MHKs pay rises

by isleofman.com 11th April 2006
A former Speaker of the House of Keys has criticised the news MHKs have received two pay rises in little more than a month.

Victor Kneale said the decision to increase members' basic salary by ?2500, to over ?34,000, was hard to justify and an abuse of a privileged position.

Tynwald members are also entitled to expenses worth over ?5500.

Last month, it was agreed to give members a 4% salary increase, backdated to August the first.

Another 3.75% hike was applied last week.

Both figures are above the 3.2 per cent February inflation rate.
