If its a contest between the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man to attract the wealthy, then it seems that the Manx are stealing a march.
The “Jersey Evening Post” newspaper has had to admit, rather ruefully, that for the first time in the history of the “Sunday Times Rich List”, there is not one Jersey resident in the top one hundred.
In the Isle of Man there are three in top one hundred, with billionaire John Whittaker leading the way with one billion three hundred million pounds. He lives at Billown outside Ballasalla, and the rise in his wealth from 900 millions last year is largely credited to the increase in value of his port properties. That includes Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. He also has the Trafford Centre and Liverpool Airport amongst his properties. By accounts he is a modest man who can be seen occasionally enjoying a pint in a local hostelry.
Behind him is Trevor Hemmings whose cup of joy flowed over a year ago when his horse " Hedgehunter" won the Grand National. "I'm one lucky feller" he exclaimed: but its more than luck that has pushed his fortune up to 928 millions.
Albert Gubay, who a few days ago gave the Island a million pounds for sport and education, followed that by declaring that the Isle of Man was his home, “he was part of the island and intended being buried here”. His fortune is 650 millions according to the Sunday Times.
Trevor Baines is now listed at 145 millions after a 15 million pound increase in his investments.
Eddie Davies and John Taylor of kettle thermostat firm Strix are credited with 99 million pounds each. Dr Taylor is currently completing his lavish new and
Eye-catching residence in Santan while Eddie Davies is given much of the credit for the success of Bolton Wanderers since he took them over in 2000.
The owners of the business house company, Charterhouse David and Carol Dean have 65 millions.
