Government is to consider what action, if any, should be taken against Douglas Corporation for its involvement in a pay dispute, and the local authority’s running as a whole.
That’s after the war of words over a Tynwald select committee report resumed yesterday (Tuesday) evening.
In a three hour debate, members failed to support amendments from Douglas North member Bill Henderson – who wanted a wide-ranging examination of the Corporation’s operations to be carried out - and from West Douglas MHK Dominic Delaney, who asked if the ?25,000 of ratepayers money incurred in legal costs over the matter - could be recovered.
Members DID support a call from Alex Downie MLC for the Department of Local Government to consider whether an independent inquiry should be established into the overall financial management and functions of the Corporation.
However, Tynwald ultimately supported a further amendment from Speaker of the House of Keys, Tony Brown, which asked for government to consider what action may be necessary and report back by October.
That overruled the report’s recommendations which included calling for Tynwald to reprimand the Corporation, its town clerk David King and also asked the Corporation to give serious consideration to Mr King’s future.
