Newly crowned Combination One League champions Peel kept alive their hopes of a league and cup double after a thrilling last-gasp success against St George’s on Saturday.
The westerners triumphed in an amazing Isle of Man Bank Junior Cup quarter-final at Douglas Road – a last minute winner from hat-trick hero Jerome Vanderbusch securing a 6-5 success against a young St George’s side.
An Andy Pennington header opened the scoring for the Geordies before Gary Christian equalised for the home side.
Vanderbusch then put Peel in front before Nick Ford levelled matters for the visitors.
John Kelly fired Peel back in front straight after the re-start only for Rob Jones to equalise quickly.
Christian, from the penalty spot, ensured the home side regained the lead once more only for Jones to add his second, this time with a spot-kick at the other end.
St George’s went ahead 11 minutes from time when substitute Gary Kirby produced a well-executed chip before Vanerbusch grabbed his second with a cracking header.
Finally, with extra-time looming in a game neither side deserved to lose, Vanderbusch pounced yet again to complete an excellent hat-trick and a thrilling match.
Peel will travel to St Mary’s in the semi-finals after an 89th minute Jock Shaw goal was enough to see off the spirited challenge of Old Boys.
Another side tipped for glory in the competition, Laxey, survived a scare before edging out Rushen United 3-2 at Glen Road.
The Miners had led 3-0 at the break with goals from the experienced trio of Jason Price, Brent Thomas and Ian Young.
But they were pushed back all the way after the break before progressing to a semi-final against Castletown, who edged out Ramsey 1-0 at the Stadium with a second half Greg Hoskisson goal.
In OSA Division One, Gymns went down in an exciting match against Douglas Royal at Noble’s Park.
Fresh from a superb 4-1 victory against Peel in midweek, Gymns were defeated 3-2, despite goals from Kieron Iveagh and David Reece.
In CFS Division Two, Foxdale and Ramsey Youth Centre shared four goals at Billy Goat Park, while Pulrose continued their fine league form in the second half of the season, thrashing Douglas and District 8-1.
Their main striker, Gary Skillicorn, led the rout with a four goal haul and was joined on the scoresheet by Barry English, Dave Moore, Paul Carney and an own goal.
