"Shock" over leniency of sentence

by isleofman.com 5th May 2006
A newspaper in Lancashire has reported the "disgust" felt by a woman over the sentence given to her brother's killer at Douglas courthouse a week ago.

Anne Marie Gosling was jailed for four and a half years, after admitting the manslaughter, on the grounds of diminished responsibility, of her partner, Peter Ormiston, in Ramsey in January 2004.

But Mr Ormiston's sister, Margaret Howard, has told a paper in Clitheroe of her family's "shock" at the leniency of the sentence, and says "justice has not been done".

Mrs. Howard travelled to the Island with members of her family for last Friday's sentencing and, according to the newspaper, had hoped Gosling would be jailed for 20 years.

The prosecution pursued the lesser charge after new evidence showed the defendent had been described by her GP as "severely depressed" in November 2003 and again five days before Mr Ormiston died.

Police in the Isle of Man have asked the Attorney General to consider lodging an appeal against Gosling's sentence on the grounds it was too lenient.
