Statistics released by the Treasury show it’s running at just 2.9 per cent, a fall of 0.1 per cent on March’s tally.

The biggest risers last month were leisure goods and services, while the only indices to fall were food and drink.

On April 18, the average price for a pint of lager was ?2.68, while unleaded petrol stood at just 96.7 pence per litre.
