Island needs to diversify

by isleofman.com 13th May 2006
Union Chief Bernard Moffatt says the Island needs to diversify further if it's to avoid scenarios currently affecting our manufacturing industry.

His comments came after Strix announced it was shedding 30 jobs, closing its Ronaldsway plant and transferring production to Ramsey.

Trade and Industry Minister Alex Downie said he was hopeful about the fate of staff facing redundancy at the company, which has been under pressure from competition in the Far East and rising copper prices.

However, Mr Moffatt is not so optimistic about the general long-term situation.
