Health and safety gone mad?

A well known film maker in the Isle of Man is raising a note of dissent over the growing number of health and safety regulations - which he claims are restricting his activities.

Charles Guard was speaking in a debate in which the value of risk assessments and safety rules was questioned.

And Mr Guard (pictured) says the regulations - enforced by the Department of Local Government and the Environment - also add substantial extra expense.

He's been filming in the Laxey mines for many years without interference.

But he says that's all changed now:

Nick Black is Chief Health and Safety Inspector in the Island.

He says the vast majority of rules are sensible and reasonable.

But he admits there have been bizarre stories in the media - such as banning conkers or the man who was barred from getting on a bus because he was carrying a tin of paint.

He says these give his team's work a bad name:
