Island company sets sights on Microsoft

by isleofman.com 26th May 2006
A new operating system for PCs is due to be launched by a Douglas-based company this month – and it’s hoping to take on Microsoft’s stranglehold on the PC market.

Ubuntu is a version of Linux developed by Canonical, based in Circular Road, Douglas.

The latest version, 6.06, is hoping to compete with Microsoft’s next version of Windows, Vista.

Like other Linux distributions, the software is free – but the company makes its money by charging for support packages

Canonical says this is the first enterprise-ready version of Ubuntu, which is already installed on hundreds of thousands of computers around the world.
