The consultation into a national speed limited has voted against bringing in limits on unrestricted roads.
With just under 13,600 votes sent in, over 54% said "no!" to a 70 mile an hour limit over the mountain.
However 42% said they were in favour.
Fifty-five per cent against 42 % said "no!" to 60 miles an hour on unrestricted roads away from the mountain.
But just under 58%, a big majority, said they wanted action to promote safety.
Forms collected from post offices and government offices showed a much higher percentage in favour of "no change".
Transport Minister Phil Braidwood says he will accept the message given by the public but his Department will press ahead with on-going measures to improve safety.
But he underlined, there would not be another attempt to bring in a national speed limit for "the foreseeable future":
