Brother v brother in the quarter-finals at Peel, with Kevin against Peter Moore. Kevin through courtesy of 4 and 3 victory over first-time qualifier, Jason Moore, with a confident display despite carrying a niggling injury. Peter came back from 2 down after 2, to show Peter Quirk the door 3 and 2.
It was the Suttons who had the closest finishes, with David having a 1up win over Brian Duggan, a game that was close all the way and 8 time winner, Julian, coming back from 3 down to take the game to the 18th, losing 1down to Steve Ellis.
Big winners were, one of last year’s losing semi-finalists, Donal Mulholland, who finished off Gary Ashe on the 14th with a 5 and 4, Donal 6 under for the holes completed. A similar distance was recorded by Mark Pugh who produced a winning surge around the top of the course to see off Peter Glover.
Island Junior Champion, Chris Kneen, produced some fine golf to beat Mike Rae on the 16th, winning 4 and 3. Chris and his caddie winning the best turned out award in their matching all black with white belts.
Defending Champion, Paul Lowey, was taken all the way by Eion Moriarty. Eion got the game back to all-square on the 14th sloting in a birdie. After long drives on both 15 and 16, the two halved – Paul making sand saves on both, the two then parred the 17th. Drives of 330 yards down 18 finished within three feet of each other – Paul missed the green just short right but Eion caught his approach a little thin and the result was an impossible shot from the back – a win for Paul 2 up and a slightly sad end to a gallant try from Eion.
