Police say they’re making changes to the way they work with people they’ve detained following suggestions from a new volunteer scheme.
The Independent Custody Visitor Scheme started in April and has a team of people drawn from the public who check on the welfare of prisoners.
The make arranged and random visits to police stations to ensure police follow rules and procedures and protect the human rights of those accused of crimes.
Inspector Richard Power says the initiative has been a great success, and work has begun on a list of changes.
