Port Soderick's Alex Lloyd claimed his first victory with AFS racing in the Indy Pro Series on Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Qualifying took place on Friday afternoon in extremely high temperatures, and Alex found himself in second just missing out on pole position.
Unfortunately, he woke up on race day feeling extremely dehydrated and generally unwell. Shortly before the race team owner Gary Peterson took Alex to the medical centre, and staff there immediately hooked him up to an intravenous drip where he stayed until 10 minutes before the race.
The race itself didn't start well, with Alex losing four places at the start when his engine became flooded with fuel.
However, he began to pick the other drivers off one by one making his way up the field to second place.
Alex was gaining speed lap by lap, edging nearer to the race leader, Graham Rahal, setting the fastest lap along the way. A yellow flag was pulled out with 5 laps to go, which meant everybody was brought back together.
On the restart Rahal went wide at turn one and Alex took full advantage to snatch the race lead. He then pushed hard for the final two laps to take a memorable victory.
The next round of the championship is at the Nashville Oval on the 15th July.
