Minimum wage bid fails

by isleofman.com 11th July 2006
An attempt in Tynwald to increase the minimum wage to ?5.50 an hour has failed to gain support.

North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson (pictured) moved the issue as "a matter of public concern".

He wanted Industry Minister Alex Downie to go back to the Minimum Wage Committee and ask them to re-evaluate their earlier recommendation of ?5.40 an hour.

Mr Downie declined and Tynwald supported him by throwing out Mr. Henderson's motion by 18 votes to 11.
