Government could face legal action over pier

The door is firmly open for a petition of doleance to be served against the Department of Local Government and the Environment.

That’s according to Leonard Singer MLC after a renewed call to restore the Queen’s Pier failed in Tynwald last night.

Mr Singer had asked for the Victorian structure to be brought up to the standard applicable to that of a listed building in private ownership.

An amendment from the Local Government Minister, John Rimington, was defeated in the Legislative Council.

He had called for any action to be deferred until next February when the Council of Ministers is due to report back on a select committee’s recommendations on the pier’s future.

Mr Singer (pictured) says, in effect, the Island’s parliament has voted against implementing its own policy:
