TT visitors do well at Heysham

by isleofman.com 18th July 2006
Speed traps set up to catch bikers on their way to this year’s TT festival showed most breaking the law in Heysham were locals – not would-be racing spectators.

Lancashire police say 81% of those caught speeding on the Heysham bypass – which has a 50 miles an hour limit – were from the area.

Operation Bikewatch was launched to cover the TT period as thousands of motorcyclists headed for Heysham Port whilst travelling to the event.

PC Keith Collins, who organised the operation, said bikers kept within the limit while local drivers were flouting it.

This year saw 1,500 motorcyclists a day heading to Heysham but there were no accidents. The top speed recorded during the week-long operation was 102mph.
