Firecrews were called out to the Children's Non Secure Unit at the White Hoe on Sunday after fire broke out in a bedroom.
Just after midnight, a cloth, draped over a bedside lamp ignited.
The unit was evacuated and the fire put out.
Two hours later crews were called to the B10 Barregarrow Brandywell Road at Sartfell Bends where a pick-up truck had gone off the road and run down a ravine.
The driver had left the scene before crews arrived and search of the area for possible casualties failed to find anyone.
Just one vehicle is thought to have been involved.
The Fire Service's Hill Search team was called in along with civil defence volunteers and police.
