Lonan man to be rewarded for bravery

The World War Two bravery of a Lonan man, who risked his life to help Polish insurgents try to overthrow the Nazi occupation, will be recognised by Poland’s government later this week.

Doug Matthews, of Ballacannell, will leave for Warsaw on Thursday and spend six days as a guest of the government.

In 1944, he flew for ten hours over hostile territory at a height of just 300 feet to drop supplies for resistance fighters.

He says he’s looking forward to seeing the city from a new angle (audio file attached):
